Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Rigid Dwarf'
Rare Dwarf Conifer - Hinoki Cypress

Zones 4-8

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Rigid Dwarf' is a fantastic dwarf Hinoki cypress that forms a dense, upright pyramidal habit with rich, glossy green foliage. The stiff, shell-like sprays give this selection a refined texture similar to 'Nana Gracilis', but with a more upright, architectural form that creates exceptional structure in the landscape.

Growing about 4 to 5 inches each year, 'Rigid Dwarf' reaches approximately 4 ft tall by 2 ft wide in 10 years, making it an excellent choice for foundation plantings, rock gardens, Japanese gardens, or as a specimen in a container. Its slow growth, evergreen color, and naturally tidy habit make it a low-maintenance addition that provides year-round interest.

Originally selected as a chance seedling and introduced by Hillier Nurseries in England during the 1960s, 'Rigid Dwarf' has become a favorite among conifer collectors for its dependable growth, rich green foliage, and elegant form. Whether planted as a focal point or combined with Japanese maples and other dwarf conifers, this outstanding Hinoki cypress brings texture and beauty to the garden in every season.
